Indiana Sucker Fishing Article
Topic: Live Bait Fishing

I love musky fishing with Live Bait, with over ¼ of my fish coming on some sort of live bait this year the $4 suckers were worth the cost.  It is Kind of a ritual thing with me and suckers. If I can get them to fish with no matter what time of year I am using them. There are certain times of the year when suckers are not available and that is when we improvise and switch to using bluegill that we catch in the lake. In this article I will try to up your percentage of catching muskies on live bait rigs.  By showing Which Live bait rigs to use in what conditions. I will give you a better understanding of what is going on below the surface of the lake before a muskie eats a sucker and after they take the sucker and run.  Lastly I will go over some of the VHS regulations and rules. If you are planning on going any where out of state Make sure you check on the VHS rules on live bait because they vary vastly from state to state.

I use 2 different styles of sucker rigs the circle hook and lift off rigs. The first is a Fluorocarbon leader with a Single Octopus circle hook for times when the water is clear and the muskies are being picky. You have to match the hook size to the size of the sucker. I use the #8 for large suckers over 12” and the #6 for any suckers less than 12”.  The 2nd is my version of the quick strike rig I have slim lined the Quick strike down for less hardware because the Indiana musky have become very mindful of hardware on suckers. I use 2 kinds of “quick strike” rigs they both start with the same 7 strand leader material  one has  a single treble hook and the other has 2 Trebles one on each lead. There is a time and Place for Both Styles of Rigs and I have incorporated them into my arsenal of techniques through out the year not just the typical fall sucker season.

I use The Lift off or quick Set rig most of the time when ever I can because the Hooking percentage is better with the Treble hook set up & It has the ability to set the hook on the fish almost immediately after the fish takes the sucker. We catch more of our hits on the lift off versus the Circle but have more hit on the circle hook rig. There are times when using the circle seems to be the ticket because of very clear water, picky fish, Blue bird days when the fish can see very well it is the only way. One draw back on the circle hook rig is that when the muskie eats the sucker you have to wait on the fish to turn the sucker and begins to swallow before you begin to reel it in and there is no real hook set with the circle you just have to make sure that the fish is pointing away form you and reel. Most of the time the hook will pull off the sucker and catch in the corner of the mouth. From my observations when the Muskies metabolism slows down in the cool fall water and the muskies start to eat slower I have to switch back to the quick set trebles to get a hook in them before they spit the rig out You could be waiting upwards of 20 minutes for the musky to turn the sucker in the cooler water.

My set up in the boat is 2 down lines (rods with sucker rigs and weight to send the rigs straight down below the boat) and one out line with a bobber attached about 50 feet behind the boat to get it away from all the sounds of the boat. You want to make sure that you don’t use to big of a bobber because the musky may feel the tension and let go of the sucker.  Typically where ever you find good casting spots for muskies is a good spot to drag meat as we call it. I fish suckers anywhere from the surface of the lake to 15ft deep with weight depending on the depth of the lake and the thickness of the weeds. Always is a good time to be fishing suckers I have even caught them while inside the tube dragging them through to get into backwater. It is very important to not continuously drag the sucker some times you need to slow down or even stop the boats momentum, it will give the suckers time to rest and swim more freely. When the weeds are heavy or close to the surface I just shallow them up. In this situation sucker fishing for muskies is a lot like Bobber fishing for Bluegill. You just have to be able to get the bait in there face with out getting all slimed on the weeds.

I like to be close to the sucker rods in the back of the boat while I am guiding from the back If my clients have a follow I will Jig or shake the suckers to attract a trailing off fish back to the boat and maybe take the sucker. It is sometimes hard to tell if you have a bite or not the muskie doesn’t always take it and run in that case you can reverse the trolling motor and slightly back up if it is caught in weeds or fowled it will just stay there and get some slack line, if a Fish has it usually they will take more line out as you are going backwards towards the sucker.

Each Muskie and Muskie catch is different and Individual please make sure that you have the proper release tools and technique to minimize stress on both the fish and the angler. Don’t be afraid to cut hooks and make sure that you have long needle nose pliers to get at hooks.

Viral Hemorrhagic Septicemia or VHS is a serious problem. At this time Indiana has no regulation on live bait fishing but soon will. Laws and rules vary vastly from state to state. If you plan on going to any other state you must make sure that you know all the special rules and regulations. You can find rules listed on the individual states DNR Websites.  For instance I recently went on an outing to Michigan and wanted to take suckers along. I had to find a Michigan certified supplier and get a Dated Receipt with the Certification Batch number. It was only good for 14 days. To get around the fact that I had to empty all water from boat before leaving the Ramp. In Turn killing the suckers I had left. We brought a portable tank with us in the truck that never touched any lake water it was filled with hose water from the house the tank was my main Tank in the truck and I got sucker from it as needed. We were only there for 2 days so it was fairly easy. If you were going for several days things could get tricky, because you cannot put the suckers from you boat back in the tank you must get rid of them before leaving the ramp at the end of each day.  These rules apply to all live bait transportation.  It is also a good idea to start emptying all your water , bilge your boat and try to pull all the weeds off your trailer and boat before leaving the ramps here in Indiana to help stop the spread on invasive species now more than ever because of the VHS virus. If you do fish a lake that is known to have VHS infection already it is a good idea to use a diluted Bleach solution on all areas that touch water on the boat and trailer including live wells and bilge areas. I even disinfect Reels, nets and bump boards anything that may touch water while fishing.

 Hammer your hook sets,

Chae Dolsen
